This 2-day virtual workshop is an introduction to the process of enameling on steel. This class provides the opportunity to explore the unique surface quality, mark-making, and rich durable color that enamel has to offer on this inexpensive and dynamic base material. In addition to the process itself, we will look at personal equipment needs, sourcing materials, outsourcing, and design problem solving.
- The history of enamel on steel and applications both large and small
- Equipment needs
- Troubleshooting designs to account for loading into the kiln and warping
- Best steel alloys for enameling (and sourcing)
- Mixing, applying and firing liquid-form enamel on steel surfaces (and sourcing)
- Tinting with ceramic pigments
- Using pre-enameled steel sheet for sample-making
- Preparing the steel for successful enamel bond
- Demoing basics of spraying liquid form enamel and equipment needed
- Post-firing surface treatments and finishing
